Change grade basis

NOTICE: Due to COVID-19, the University has provided more flexibility in selecting your grade basis for fall 2020 and spring 2021 classes. More information is available in the Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 S/N Fact Sheet. These changes were spurred by a resolution from the Minnesota Student Association (MSA) and a student-led petition. Changes were made in consultation with MSA leadership and with numerous faculty governance bodies, advisors, Deans and Associate Deans.

View or change a grade basis

To change your current grade basis for your class(es), please fill out the Change Grade Basis Request form (for Twin Cities undergraduate students only).

In order for One Stop Student Services to process your request, your class will need a final grade posted. To view your current grades, go to MyU: Academics > Grades.

Before you decide whether to change a grade basis, consider potential impacts on financial aid, graduate or professional school applications, and/or eligibility for scholarships. Talk with One Stop Student Services or your academic advisor to determine potential impacts.

Choosing a grade basis

You may take a course under A-F or S/N (i.e. "pass/fail") grading bases, or you may Audit a course for no grade. In many cases, you can choose your grade basis when you register, but some courses limit the options available.

The University policy states that you cannot take major courses with an S/N grading basis, unless a particular course required by your major is only offered with an S/N grading basis. However, there are some exceptions due to COVID-19.

Fall 2020 and spring 2021 policy exceptions:

  • Undergraduate: Any classes for which you select the S/N option will not count toward any credit limits on S/N classes. Additionally, classes taken S/N may fulfill undergraduate program requirements.
  • Graduate and professional: Speak with your program about exceptions to the policy. They may differ from program to program.

Contact your program or academic advisor with questions.
