Change grade basis

Due to COVID-19, students have been provided more flexibility in selecting the grade basis for their fall 2020 and spring 2021 classes. Students can change their grading basis in full semester and second 7-week session classes until November 30. See the Fall 2020 & Spring 2021 S/N Fact Sheet for more information.

These changes were spurred by a resolution from the Minnesota Student Association (MSA) and a student-led petition. Changes were made in consultation with MSA leadership and with numerous faculty governance bodies, advisors, Deans and Associate Deans.

To view the grade basis for your classes, navigate to the current term on the Grades tab in MyU: Academics (see step-by-step instructions). You should consult with One Stop Student Services or your academic advisor before changing your grading basis as it could have potential implications for financial aid, graduate or professional school applications, and eligibility for scholarships.

Choosing your grade basis

You may take a course under A-F or S/N (i.e. "pass/fail") grading bases, or you may Audit a course for no grade. In many cases, you can choose your grade basis when you register, but some courses limit the options available. Be aware that you cannot take major courses with an S/N grading basis, unless a particular course required by your major is only offered with an S/N grading basis. Contact your academic advisor if you have questions about when you can take a course S/N.
