This is a handbook with information about residency and reciprocity. It includes a link to the Resident Classification Evaluation Request Form, which students can use to request to be classified as a Minnesota resident for tuition purposes.
A parent cannot complete this form on your behalf.
To complete this form, you will be asked to provide:
- Driver’s license information
- School attendance information
- Employment and military service details
You will have the opportunity to upload support documentation that helps demonstrate residency. Some documents you might need are:
- Military service documents
- Letters of financial support from Minnesota residents
- Visa or residency documentation
- Lease documents or property tax statements
Use this form if...
You are classified as a nonresident student and:
- Meet the minimum residency requirements:
- Are permanently residing in Minnesota
- Have been continuously present in the state of Minnesota for at least one calendar year prior to the first day of class attendance at the University
- During that one-year period, the student must not have attended any other Minnesota post-secondary educational institutions.
- Are a permanent U.S. resident of migrant background employed in seasonal agricultural labor in Minnesota.
- Are full-time faculty members at an accredited Minnesota college.
- Are an accredited foreign diplomatic official.
- A student enrolled in east Asian languages from associated colleges of Hamline University, Augsburg University, Macalester College, University of St. Thomas, or St. Catherine University.
- A graduate of a Minnesota high school.
- Your tuition is paid by the state of Minnesota.
- You are classified as military personnel on active duty in Minnesota.
Don't use this form if...
- You are classified as a resident student.
- You are not permanently residing in Minnesota or have not been continuously present in the state of Minnesota for at least one calendar year prior to the first day of class attendance at the University.
- You are a resident of Wisconsin, North Dakota, or Manitoba seeking reciprocity.
