Cost of Attendance Appeal

This form allows students to request an adjustment to their cost of attendance (COA) due to higher-than-expected expenses, which may increase their financial aid eligibility.

Use this form if...

  • You have additional educational expenses such as required course materials, a computer, or increased transportation costs.
  • You face higher-than-normal living expenses, such as rent exceeding the university’s estimated amount.
  • You have dependent care costs that impact your ability to attend school.
     

Don't use this form if...

  • You want to appeal your or Student Aid Index (SAI) due to changes in income—use a Special Circumstances Appeal instead.
  • You need more financial aid but don’t have documented expenses exceeding the standard COA.
  • You are requesting a general increase in aid without specific costs to justify the adjustment.
     

Next steps

One week before the start of the term, the U of M Office of Student Finance will begin reviewing Cost of Attendance Appeals. You will be notified of your appeal decision within 15 days once the processing period has begun.
