Check
where you teach
Due to changes in classroom space, many faculty and
instructors may find themselves teaching in a different building and
room than they are used to. Please remember to check the building and
room for your classes prior to the first day. If you are a staff member
who works with faculty and instructors, you are encouraged to remind
them to double-check their classroom location. Questions should be
directed to ocmsched@umn.edu.
Student aid planning resources
Students face momentous decisions on the road to higher
education. Where should I go? What career do I want? How to pay? With
so many options and life-changing outcomes to consider, the weight of
these choices can hang heavy over a young student. However, a little
planning can make all the difference.
A wealth of resources are available to help students
make informed choices. Two worth noting are recent additions from the
U.S. Department of Education (ED) and U.S. Department of Labor (DOL).
College.gov
motivates students to pursue higher education and offers excellent
advice on getting there, from ED as well as site visitors. The
intriguing social media approach allows viewers to submit their own
reasons "I'm going" and generates the text as attractive billboard art
along the road that leads to school. The information is every bit as
useful as it is well designed. It all adds up to a persuasive and
actionable resource for college seekers.
Careervoyages.gov
takes valuable data on careers, pay ranges, education & training
requirements and packages it all up for people exploring possible
career choices. ED and DOL have partnered to draw upon their most
widely used reports and the Occupational Outlook Handbook offering
visitors an insightful look at careers that may interest them, and
which ones are most in demand. Parents, students and advisers will find
excellent tools here to help job seekers line up their interests with
relevant skills and careers.

Policy Office Web site redesign: update your bookmarks

A total face lift, including new
navigation. The featured design elements incorporate the requirements
from the administrative policy on Trademarks, Logos, Colors, and Seal
policy.
Appendices and FAQs now have a standard template.
More than 200 appendices are now in a consistent format.
Policy printouts. Users can now print from
their Web browser.
A “Policy Post” feature on the home page. This
space will be used to highlight critical announcements for our users,
such as reminding users to view policies that are under review.
Please take a moment to visit the site at policy.umn.edu and provide your
feedback via the Policy Post on the home page.
Student Veterans Appreciation Day 2009
The Third Annual Student Veterans Appreciation Day is
planned for Wednesday, November 11, 2009, which coincides with the
annual Veterans Day holiday that honors American military veterans. All
veterans and their family members, faculty, staff, students, and the
public are invited to the day-long event at the Great Hall, Coffman
Memorial Union, East Bank campus.
This Twin Cities campus event is an opportunity for the
University community to recognize University of Minnesota student
veterans and service members from all branches of the military. The day
will feature activities to increase awareness among veterans of campus
organizations and resources available to assist them as they transition
into academic life.
One Stop Student Services sponsors the event, along with
other University and community partners. For more information, please
contact Mary Koskan at
m-kosk@umn.edu
or 612-625-0160.
Student veteran orientation
The Veterans Certification office will be hosting an
orientation for new student veterans to answer questions on the
veterans benefits process and its effect on financial aid; Chapter 33
and other veteran/military benefits; and One Stop procedures. The
two-hour sessions will be held in B20 (lower level) Fraser Hall, East
Bank campus (map)
as follows:
Thursday, August 27, 1-3 p.m.
Wednesday, September 2, 8:30-10:30 a.m.
Thursday, September 3, 4:30-6:30 p.m.
If students would like to attend, they can e-mail veterans@umn.edu with "RSVP" in the
subject line and the time, day, and date of the session in the body of
the e-mail.
Chapter 33 briefing for student veterans
The Veterans Certification office will be hosting a
information session on the new Chapter 33 benefit. This session will
help student veterans understand the application process, eligibility,
financial aid impacts, and the Yellow Ribbon program. The hour session
will be held in B20 (lower level) Fraser Hall, East Bank campus as
follows:
Tuesday, September 1, 1-2 p.m.
Veteran advisers will be available for an hour after the
session to complete paperwork and answer individual questions. Student
veterans are asked to bring a copy of their DD214 with them. To RSVP,
e-mail veterans@umn.edu.
New benefit for student veterans
Beginning August 1 the new Chapter 33 (also known as the
Post 9/11 GI Bill) has benefits available for eligible veterans who
served on active duty (other than initial training) after September 10,
2001. This benefit will pay a portion or up to all undergraduate
tuition and fees, along with stipends for living and book expenses.
Student veterans may contact the University Veterans
Certification Office to determine if they are eligible for this
benefit. To apply, complete the online application
or a printed application available from the Veterans Certification
Office. The completed application (or copy of the online application
confirmation) and a copy of the veterans DD-214 form should be
submitted to the Veterans
Certification Office.
The Veterans Administration (VA) will determine
eligibility and send a letter to the applicant listing the benefit
percentage rating, based on the amount of time served. To complete the
application process, you must send a copy of the eligibility letter to
the Veterans
Certification Office.
