Liberal education: Did U know?
Question: Can a Liberal Education course fulfill both a core and a theme?
Answer: The new LE requirements do allow for a course to fulfill one core and one theme, if each is fully integrated into the course. A course can no longer meet more than one theme. Theme courses draw on the perspectives of numerous disciplines, focus on issues of lasting importance for our nation and the world, and offer students opportunities to explore the connections between formal study and the obligations of responsible citizenship. They offer a complementary dimension to the ‘ways of knowing’ focus that characterizes the cores. Previously, a course could satisfy both a core and a theme if approximately a third of the course material related to the theme. This is no longer sufficient. LE courses will be expected to weave the theme throughout the course; evidence of a fully integrated and sustained theme would include opportunities for theme-related discussion, assignments, and readings.

Wait list is an option within PeopleSoft (PS) Student Records that allows a department to set up and maintain a list of students who request entry to a class that has been filled. If wait-listing has been set up for a class and it reaches capacity, a student attempting to enroll will immediately have access to join the wait list using the Web enrollment system. When an opening in the class becomes available, the department can choose to send a registration permission number to a student manually, or using the auto-invite process.
The information on the wait class list report helps departments and instructors prioritize students on the wait list so any seat that becomes available is offered first to the most appropriate person. In spring 2009, more than 5,000 students were successfully enrolled from wait lists.
Wait-listing can also be used to help a department determine the demand for its classes. Students still on the wait list at the end of the cancel/add period will have the wait list classes removed from their records. Colleges and departments can find out which or how many students were on a wait list from one of several sources, depending on user access:
- The historical class wait list report in PS at Home > Curriculum Management > UM Wait List > UM Historical Wait List.
- The IMS Wait List at www.umreports.umn.edu.
- A Data Warehouse view named "PS_UM_STD_ENR_HIST." (Data Warehouse views will not appear in the list of tables. A free-form query must be used to retrieve the data.)
The setup of classes (i.e. multiple component, instructor permission) will affect how well wait list will work for your department. For more about wait-listing, visit http://training.asr.umn.edu/records/ or contact the Student Records Help Line at 612-625-2803 or srhelp@umn.edu.
Changes coming at asr.umn.edu
Keeping in touch with Academic Support Resources (ASR) is about to get even easier! The new and improved ASR Web debuts in May as a better organized, more comprehensive, and more transparent site.
The new asr.umn.edu will help student services professionals on all campuses complete daily tasks, check the status of their ASR projects, and collaborate with ASR experts like never before. Our goal is to provide you an online home that reflects ASR's cross-functional approach to making a difference in students' lives.
Existing links will redirect to the new site upon launch and users should not experience any broken links. Content may be found under different headings than you are used to, however.
To aid the transition, we're arranging to visit the April and May meetings of several key constituencies to demo the site and gather suggestions. If your group is interested in a brief site demo, please contact communications coordinator Nate Thompson at thom3278@umn.edu.
May RAC meeting
The next meeting of the Registrar's Advisory Committee (RAC) will be Monday, May 4, in 101 Walter Library from 10-11:30 a.m.
If you have questions about this meeting or would like to be added to the listserv to receive meeting minutes and important messages for student services staff, please contact Kasi Williamson at will2026@umn.edu.
