Liberal education: Did U know?
What has changed: Revitalizing the Core
A major component of the new Liberal Education requirements is the Core, which helps students recognize and apply a variety of approaches to understanding the world. Highlights of changes to the Core requirements include:
- Core courses must now employ teaching and learning strategies that engage students with doing the work of the field, not just reading about it. For example, in a history course students must work with primary sources, focusing on what it means to think like a historian.
- Courses must include small group experiences (such as discussion sections, labs, or regular small group experiences within large classes) and use writing as appropriate to the discipline to help students learn and reflect on their learning.
- Core courses will be offered on a regular schedule, allowing students to plan their degree programs and stay on track for graduation.
- Core courses must explicitly help students understand what liberal education is, how the content and the substance of the courses enhance a liberal education, and what this means for them as students and as citizens.

Changes to grading rosters
There has been a recent change to the grading rosters. All
faculty and instructors will be required to submit a "last date of
participation" for any student earning a grade of "F" or "N" in a
course. When a student earns a grade of "F" or "N," the extent to which
that student's financial aid is affected is dependent upon the last day
of participation in that class. Federal regulation requires a
cancellation of 50 percent of a student's federal Title IV funds if no
course participation can be determined. To read more about this
regulation, please see pages 5-66 and 5-67 of the Student
Financial Aid Handbook.
Faculty and instructors are required to include a last date
of participation for "F" or "N" grades before the grade roster can be
submitted. This includes supplemental grades.
A
comprehensive set of frequently asked questions has been created
and added to the Grades FAQ on the One Stop Web site. E-mail
communications have been sent to faculty and instructors, as well as
staff who work with grades. Additional e-mail communications will be
sent closer to the grade submission window.
If you have questions about this change, please contact Sue
Van Voorhis at vanvo002@umn.edu.
November RAC meeting
The November Registrar's Advisory Committee (RAC) meeting
will be held Monday, November 3, in 101 Walter Library from 10-11:30

the Senate educational policies. If you have questions about this
meeting or would like to be added to the listserv to receive meeting
minutes and important messages for student services staff, please
contact Ingrid Nuttall at ingridn@umn.edu.
