Liberal Education: did U know?

Announcement of changes to Liberal Education curriculum

The Council on Liberal Education is pleased to present recommendations for the revised liberal education curriculum. These recommendations were approved by the Twin Cities Assembly in April 2008 and will go into effect for students entering a program at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities in fall 2010.

The new requirements are clearer and more rigorous, and place greater emphasis on helping students understand why we have liberal education and explicitly what educational benefits these requirements provide. Like the current requirements, the new requirements have a matrix structure, with seven Core areas (Arts and Humanities, Biological Sciences, Historical Perspectives, Literature, Mathematical Thinking, Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences) and five Theme areas (Civic Life and Ethics, Diversity and Social Justice in the United States, the Environment, Global Perspectives, and Technology and Society). Technology is a new Theme requirement; a reduction of one course in the core (from two social science courses to one), means that we will continue to have twelve distinct requirements.

Liberal Education (LE) systems updates: APAS and Graduation Planner

The implementation of the new LE requirements will affect many systems over the next two years. You will be notified of these systems updates by e-mail, in the Record, at Registrar’s Advisory Committee (RAC) meetings, and/or through presentations to the advising community.

The first systems update is related to APAS and Graduation Planner, which will be affected by the re-certification of LE courses. As you may know, all LE courses must be submitted to the Council for Liberal Education in order to be re-certified to fulfill LE requirements in fall 2010 and later terms. The review will take place from October 2008-December 2009; the majority of the re-certification process should be complete before fall 2010 registration.

A new message has been posted to APAS to assist students during this transition:

“All liberal education (LE) courses for fall 2010 and later terms are under review. New LE courses will be posted on One Stop and in Graduation Planner as they are approved. Check periodically to be sure that your planned courses will fulfill the requirements. This does not affect courses taken before fall 2010.”

If you perform degree clearances, please be aware that this note will always appear as an “unfulfilled requirement” in APAS.

Laurel Carroll will be meeting with advisers from across the Twin Cities campus during fall 2008 semester. Please contact Laurel at l-carr@umn.edu with questions or concerns.
