University not affected by student loan tensions
Despite some alarming headlines
regarding turmoil in the student loan industry, the Office of Student
Finance (OSF) does not anticipate a major impact or disruption for
students attending the University of Minnesota. The University
participates in the Federal Direct Loan program, where the Department
of Education serves as lender. The schools with the greatest concerns
are those participating in the Federal Family Education Loan Program
(FFELP), where banks serve as lenders.
The Federal Direct Loan program is
stable and there is no question about fund availability. The University
began participating in the Direct Loan Program in 1995 after concluding
this program offered better service to students, reduced delays, and
enhanced repayment options. OSF's current business processes and
computer interfaces with the Department of Education are up and running
smoothly.
The State of Minnesota has an
excellent state loan program, the Student Educational Loan Fund (SELF),
used by many of our students. This program is administered by the
Minnesota Office of Higher Education. OSF has consulted with the
manager of the program and has been assured no funding issues are
anticipated for SELF loans next year.
OSF will continue to monitor loan
issues as they unfold.
Reminder: "One Stop" is two words
Just a reminder that when referencing the One Stop Web site or One Stop Student Services, please note that "One Stop" is two words. If you notice it spelled as one word on your department or collegiate Web sites or publications, please assist us in making the correction.
Summer and fall 2008 registration process for graduate non-degree
students
Many students may soon be contacting the University regarding registering and earning credit as non-degree seeking students. Typically, these students have been admitted for a future semester or are considering applying to a graduate program and want to take classes that will transfer once admitted. Detailed information about this program can be found online.
Students interested in attending the University summer 2008 should submit a “Request for Graduate Credit” form to the department(s) offering the course(s) they are interested in. If the department’s Director of Graduate Studies or their designee approves the course(s) for graduate credit, the form is signed and forwarded to:
One Stop Services, 130 West Bank Skyway
219 19th Ave S.,
Minneapolis, MN 55455-0427 or faxed to: 612/626-9129.
Questions concerning this process can be directed to Amy Morrisey (or call: 612-624-6871) or Alison Frank-Quick (or call: 612-626-9116).
