AHC dual-career registration

Only Academic Health Center (AHC) students (medical, dental, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, nursing, and public health) are permitted to register for undergraduate, graduate, and law courses while concurrently enrolled in a University degree program, with one exception: students who are already in an AHC public health graduate program cannot enroll in any other graduate-level course work outside their AHC program.

Can I take advantage of dual-career registration?
If you are enrolled in an AHC degree program in the Medical School or Dental School, or have been accepted into the pharmacy, veterinary medicine, nursing, and public health degree programs, you may register as a non-degree student for undergraduate and graduate courses. EXCEPTION: If you are already a graduate student, e.g., AHC public health graduate student, you cannot be active in two graduate programs simultaneously at the University.

How do I register for a class outside my AHC program?

Can I register online as a non-degree student?
If this is the first time you are registering for an undergraduate class as a non-degree student, you may register by e-mail or by submitting a printed Registration and Cancel/ Add Request. Once you have taken one class as a non-degree undergraduate, you can register online, unless your non-degree registration lapses for more than one year. To register for graduate credit as a non-degree student, go to the graduate non-degree registration options to determine which choice fits your circumstances. You will be required to complete your registration in same way; however, once you have registered, you will be able to make changes to your class information online.

If I'm acceptd into an AHC joint degree program, am I required to register as a non-degree student?
No, if you are admitted into two AHC degree (joint) programs, you are not required to apply as a non-degree student with College of Continuing Education (CCE) or the department offering the class.

Is my tuition balance due in full by the first payment due date if I register as a non-degree student?
No, as an AHC student you are exempt from the University requirement that a non-degree student must pay tuition in full by the first billing due date.

Will I have to pay fees for classes outside my AHC degree program?
Yes, you will be charged standard, technology, collegiate, materials, and any other fees for each class you take as a non-degree student, e. g., if you were a medical student who registers for a Spanish class in the College of Liberal Arts (CLA), you would be required to pay any materials or other fees assessed for that class.

How do I pay for my non-degree classes?
Tuition and fees for your non-degree lclasses will be posted to your University student account, along with the tuition and fees for your AHC degree classes. These charges, and any others assessed to your student account during the semester, will be billed to you on the published One Stop billing dates. You have the option to pay the total amount in full or a minimum amount by the due date on the billing statement. If you choose to pay the minimum due, you are electing the installment payment plan for which an installment fee is charged that will be added to your student account balance due.

Can I receive financial aid to pay for my non-degree classes?
No, you cannot receive additional financial aid for the non-degree classes in which you enroll. However, after all tuition and fees are paid for your AHC degree classes, you may use any remaining financial aid to pay tuition and fees for your non-degree classes.

Can I audit a class outside my AHC program? How do I do this?
Yes, you may chose to audit a non-degree class by indicating AUD (audit) as grade basis when you give class information on the registration form, whether online or printed. Be aware that you will not receive credit for auditing a class; however, the class will be listed on your transcript with the symbol "V" (visitor) to indicate your special registration status. By choosing to audit the course, you will be required to pay tuition and fees on the credits, although the credits do not count toward credit totals that determine your enrollment status.

Does registering as a non-degree student affect my GPA?
GPA is calculated by your AHC degree program coursework, so only AHC grades count toward your GPA. For example, if you are a Medical School student who registers as a non-degree undergraduate in a CLA Spanish class, the grade for that class counts toward your undergraduate GPA, not the medical degree GPA. In other words, if you are registered for both Medical School and undergraduate classes as a non-degree student, you will have a separate GPA for Medical School degree and undergraduate coursework.

Where will classes I take as a non-degree student appear on my transcript?
Classes taken as a non-degree student, if taken for undergraduate credit, will appear on your undergraduate record and, if taken for graduate credit, will be under your graduate record. They will not appear on your AHC degree program transcript.

What happens if I cancel a class in which I have enrolled as a non-degree student?
The same rules apply to both non-degree and degree classes regarding canceling classes. You should be aware of the refund and cancel/add deadlines. Be sure you understand the consequences before you decide to change your registration.
