Closed classes
Wait list
The University of Minnesota, Twin Cities has a wait listing as part of the Web enrollment system. You are eligible to wait list for courses offered through selected departments, as indicated by "Wait List available" appearing next to the class in the Class Schedule or Class Search.
Instructor permission
For courses not using the Web wait list, you should first go to the department offering the course, where you may be put on a manual waiting list or be referred to the instructor for permission to register. Attend the first class meeting if you are on a waiting list or need the instructor's permission to find out whether you can be admitted.
To register for a closed course you must have a class permission number from the instructor. All class permission numbers expire at the end of the second week of classes. After the second week you must go to your college office to be given online approval.
Special departmental procedures
The following departments have provided One Stop with written procedures for attempting to register in a closed class for their department.
Biology
Watch for openings on onestop.umn.edu for the following courses: BIOL 1001, 1002, 1009, 1105, 2002, 2003, 2005, and 2012. Spaces may become available in closed sections when students drop or change lab sections. If you need a closed section, add your name to the waitlisted section. If space becomes available in the waitlisted section you selected, you will be sent a permission number via email.
Chemistry
Over the summer, check course enrollment on the Class Schedule as lab seats become available for CHEM 1017, 1021, 1022, and 2311 when students drop or change sections.
For CHEM 1015, contact the chemistry department at 612-624-0026 if the course is closed.
During the first week of classes, meet outside the lab doors at the start of each lab you are available to attend for the semester. (See the Class Schedule for times and lab location for specific courses.)
Chemistry personnel will take attendance on the first day of each lab period. Students who are present outside the lab doors will be added to the lab as space is available. If there are more students needing a particular lab than spaces available, a lottery drawing will be conducted until all spaces are filled. You will begin working in a lab immediately upon admission.
If you are not admitted into one specific lab time, continue to show up for each lab time you are able to throughout the first week of classes until you are admitted or informed that all labs are full.
Once you have been assigned a lab section, you will be given a permission number to officially register for the course. This should be done by the end of the first week of the semester. Being admitted into a lab section does not officially register you for the class.
Once you are admitted into a lab section, and “checked in” to a lab drawer, you will not be allowed to change lab sections; therefore, please choose your lab time carefully.
If you are already registered, and wish to “switch” to a different section, this is possible if you have not already “checked in” to a lab drawer. Priority will be given to students who are not already registered for a lab section. If you are waiting outside the lab doors for a possible seat and you are already registered for another section, you will be given second priority.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask the staff in 115 Smith Hall at 612-624-0026. The chemistry department follows the University’s mandatory attendance policy. Students who do not arrive within the first 15 minutes of when their first lab period begins will be crossed off the lab list, and will need to officially cancel their registration.
Open spaces that become available when students fail to attend the first lab period will be given to those students who still need the course using the above stated procedure.
Physics
Registration for physics courses is done online or by processing a Course Request Form at 333 Science Teaching & Student Services. Students wishing to register for introductory physics courses are advised to watch the web frequently Openings usually appear due to student cancellations, additional seats added, or reserved seats returned to general registration. Open seats will appear on the Class Schedule at onestop.umn.edu through the second week of classes. Students may attend the first week of lectures while still watching for openings on the web. Students not registered may not attend lab or discussion sections. TAs will not give registration permission.
Please note, all physics introductory courses are offered spring 2012.
Mathematics
Registration policies and procedures are available at math.umn.edu/undergrad/registration. On this page, you can find information regarding changing, switching, or swapping for closed sections of courses; criteria for Honors Math and CSE Calculus course registration; and how to request a permission number. You can also find which math courses require entrance by application and links to most application forms.
The Undergraduate Mathematics Office handles registration issues for all regular (day/evening/summer session) MATH courses. Questions should be addressed to ugrad@math.umn.edu.
Visit the Change Registration page for the timeline and general procedures for changing class registration.
Writing Studies
As fall 2011 sections of WRIT 1301 and 1401 fill up, we encourage students to make use of the Freshman Full-Year Registration option by registering for a spring 2012 section. Nearly half of all First-Year Writing seats are available in the spring semester. For permission number requests for WRIT 1301 sections (other than sections for non-native speakers or CLA Access to Success), students should contact course instructors. Unused reserve seats will be released in July or August in consultation with the reserving program and the College of Liberal Arts.
For WRIT 1301 and 3562W, students should carefully monitor the Class Schedule at onestop.umn.edu. Spaces may become available in closed sections when students drop or change sections. If seats do not become available, students should attend the first class meeting to request a permission number directly from the instructor. An instructor may request that permission number(s) be issued to student(s) at the end of the first class meeting, if seats are available. Or, the instructor may ask interested students to return for a second class meeting for a final decision. Permission numbers are emailed to students and must be used immediately.
Generally, Writing Studies instructors do not admit students over the enrollment cap due to space and equipment limitations. All decisions regarding registration for a closed class are at the discretion of the instructor. The department only issues permission numbers at the request of an instructor. If a closed WRIT 3562W section has a waitlist please add your name. If space becomes available, you will be sent a permission number via email.
