Dual Career FAQ
This is a list of frequently asked questions (FAQ) regarding dual career registration.
It is intended for students admitted to an academic career in the Academic Health
Center (AHC) who want to take an undergraduate or graduate level course outside
their career. “Career” is the broadest level at which the University
defines students. AHC careers include Medical, Dental, Pharmacy, Vet Med and
Public Health Graduate (GRAD). Other University careers are Undergraduate (UGRD),
non-Public Health Graduate (GRAD), and Law.
Which AHC students can take advantage of dual career registration?
All degree-seeking students in the AHC may register for non-degree courses in
an Undergraduate career. This includes Medical School, Dental School, Pharmacy,
Vet Med and Public Health Students. All students except Public Health may also
register for non-degree courses in a Graduate career. Public Health is excluded
because it is already a Graduate career program and students cannot be active
in two Graduate-level programs.
How do I register for a class outside my AHC career?
Students wishing to take an Undergraduate course must register as a non-degree
student in the College of Continuing Education (CCE). Students wishing to take
a Graduate level course must register as a non-degree student through the department
offering the course. Please find more details regarding registration for non-degree
courses at: http://onestop.umn.edu/onestop/Registration/nondegree.html.
When can I register for a class outside my AHC career?
You are not able to register for classes outside your AHC career until the non-degree open enrollment period begins. Check the Registration Times for the day/time when non-degree students are allowed to register for the term.
Can I register online for a course outside my career?
Students wishing to register for a non-degree, Undergraduate-level course can
use the One Stop self-service application to register online provided they took
at least one class within the last year as a non-degree Undergraduate-level
student. Students cannot register online for non-degree Graduate-level courses,
but they can make changes to their course information online once they have
completed the initial registration request with the departments each semester.
Iżm in a Joint Degree program in the AHC; Am I required to register
as non-degree?
Students in Joint Degree programs—students admitted into two degree programs—do
not have to apply for the non-degree status with CCE or the department offering
the course.
Am I subject to the prepayment policy for non-degree students for courses
outside my career?
No. Students admitted into a degree program who also register for courses under
non-degree status through CCE or the department are exempt from the new University
requirement that non-degree students must pay their tuition in full by the first
billing due date.
Will I have to pay more fees for courses outside my career?
Students will be charged standard fees for courses in admitted career and any
additional fees for non-degree courses, if applicable. Examples of additional
fees include technology and/or collegiate fees for each career in which they
are registered. For example, a Medical School student registering for a Spanish
course will be required to pay the fees assigned by the College of Liberal Arts
(CLA) for registering in a CLA course.
How do I pay for my non-degree courses?
Tuition and fees for your non-degree course work will be posted to your University
student account along with the tuition and fees for your degree-seeking AHC
coursework. These charges, and any others assessed to your student account during
the semester, will be billed to you on the published One Stop: http://onestop.umn.edu/onestop/Tuition_Billing/wwhpay.html
billing dates. Each bill will provide you the option to pay the total due or
a minimum amount (an installment fee is associated with paying the minimum amount.)
Can I receive financial aid to pay for my non-degree courses?
You cannot receive additional financial aid for the non-degree courses in which
you enroll; however, any excess financial aid you receive for your degree-seeking
courses (career courses) may be used to pay tuition and fees for your non-degree
course work (after all tuition and fees are paid for degree seeking courses).
I want to audit a course outside my career; how do I do this?
To audit a non-degree course, indicate AUD (audit) as grade basis when entering
course information in the web registration application or on the registration
form. You will not receive credit for auditing a course; however, the course
will be listed on your transcript with the symbol “V” (Visitor)
to indicate your special registration status. Please be aware that by choosing
to audit the course you will be required to pay tuition and fees on the credit
value of the course although the course will not count toward credit totals
used to determine enrollment status.
How does registering for courses in a non-degree program affect my
GPA?
GPA is calculated by career, so only grades for courses in a given career count
towards the GPA in that career. For example, a Medical School student who takes
a non-degree Undergraduate Spanish course will have the grade for that course
count toward the Undergraduate career GPA, not the Medical career GPA. Students
registering as dual career will have a separate GPA for each career.
Where will non-degree courses display on my transcript?
Each career has a separate transcript for courses taken. Undergraduate non-degree
courses will appear as part of the Undergraduate record and Graduate non-degree
courses will be under the Graduate record. Non-degree courses will not display
under your AHC career.
What happens if I drop a non-degree course?
The same rules apply to both non-degree and degree courses regarding dropping
courses. You should be aware of the refund and drop/add deadlines. You can find
more information about changing course registration at: http://onestop.umn.edu/onestop/Registration/Changing.html.
