Deferment

You may defer principal payments on your UTFL balance if:

  • you return to an accredited institution and are officially admitted to a degree or certificate program and are enrolled for classes at least half time.

  • you participate full time in a medical residency or internship required for licensing in the medical field, for a maximum of two years (Only loans disbursed prior to August 1, 1995, qualify. Interest will continue to accrue during any residency deferment period and must be paid at least annually. Interest is payable at the out-of-school rate during deferment period.);

The deferment process is not automatic. For consideration, you must compete and submit a Loan Deferment Request, along with any required documentation, for review and approval to Student Financial Collections, as follows:

  1. by the time your first installment is due;
  2. annually (may be requested more often) as long as you are eligible for deferment; and
  3. until your deferment status ends.

The deferment request form may be completed online and downloaded for your signature. You may also use the form printed on the back of any billing statement or request a form by contacting a Student Financial Collections representative. You will be notified, explaining whether your deferment was applied, rejected, or returned to you for additional information. If your deferment request(s) is approved, the University will temporarily postpone the payments due on your loans.
