Graduate School credits for non-degree students

Follow the guidelines below if you are a non-degree student who has completed a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree program and you;

  • will apply credits earned to your chosen Graduate School degree program, when admitted; or
  • are an international student who needs to satisfy VISA requirements.

Advantages

  • Classes appear on the Graduate Career transcript under a Graduate School term header.
  • Classes are not considered transfer work if you are admitted to and use this coursework toward a Graduate School degree program.

Limitations

  • Admission is competitive; your admission is not guaranteed.
  • The admission process is more involved than the other options and may not be approved
  • Not all programs admit students for professional development coursework.

Admission

  • After confirming that your academic program allows professional development coursework, request a paper Graduate School application for admission. You should also inquire if the program has any additional requirements.
  • File the completed application at the Graduate School Admissions Office, 309 Johnston Hall, 612-625-3014, along with any supporting material by the admission deadline.
  • Submit the $75 application fee ($95 for international students) with your application. The fee must be paid by either personal check or bank draft drawn from a U. S. bank account that is made payable to the University
    of Minnesota.
  • Once the completed application has been filed with the Graduate School Admissions Office, processing takes less than four weeks.

Registration

  • Once the letter of admission is received, get any required approvals and register either on the Web or in person at a One Stop Student Services Center campus location.
  • You are admitted to the program for one term unless you register continuously, excluding May/summer.

Tuition & fees

Tuition and fees are assessed at the Graduate School tuition (resident or non-resident) rate. Note: All registration deadlines, late fees, and refund schedules are applicable. See One Stop Registration for details.
