Graduate student funding

Graduate assistantships and fellowships are available to new and currently-enrolled graduate students at the University of Minnesota. Graduate traineeships and collegiate or departmental student scholarships may be available. The following information and links will help you pursue any of those options that suit your circumstance.

Assistantships

Graduate teaching assistantships, research assistant assistantships, or administrative fellowships reduce the amount of tuition you pay if the position is least 12.5 percent time. Tuition benefits are awarded by the University year-round, including summer session. The tuition benefit amount is credited to your University student account to offset your tuition charges.

For more information, please contact your department or Graduate Assistant Employment Office, a division of the Office of Human Resources (OHR), that administers University-wide graduate assistantships.

Current graduate assistants: You risk repayment and/or cancellation of loan and other funds if you do not indicate the percentage of your appointment on your online Financial Aid Award Notice (eFAAN). You are also required to report the percentage of any increase in your appointment. Your tuition benefit status will be monitored during the academic year.

Fellowships

The Graduate School Fellowship Office administers University fellowships. You do not need to work on campus for these positions. For more information, go to the Graduate Fellowship Office Web site.

Traineeships

Traineeships are usually developed and offered at the departmental level. Please contact your department for further information regarding trainee opportunities.
