Deferment
Nursing student loan
Once the repayment period has begun, you may be eligible for periods of deferment during which interest ceases to accrue on the loan(s) and repayment of principal is not required.
Repayment may be deferred for up to:
- three years if you are on active duty as a member of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Corps or the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps; or you are a Peace Corps volunteer.
- 10 years if you are a full or half-time student who is (A) in a nursing program leading to a baccalaureate or graduate degree in nursing, or (B) pursuing advanced professional training in nursing or training to be a nurse anesthetist.
The deferment process is not automatic. For consideration, you must complete and submit a Loan Deferment Request, along with any required documentation, for review and approval to Student Financial Collections, as follows:
- by the time your first installment is due;
- annually (may be requested multiple times) as long as you are eligible for deferment; and
- until your deferment status ends.
The deferment request form may be completed online and downloaded for your signature. You may also use the form printed on the back of any billing statement or request a form by contacting a Student Financial Collections representative. You will be notified, explaining whether your deferment was applied, rejected, or returned to you for additional information. If your deferment request(s) is approved, the University will temporarily postpone the payments due on your loans.
