Eligible loan programs

Loans that may be consolidated under both the FFEL and Direct Loan Consolidation programs include:

  • student loans made under the FFEL Federal Stafford Loan (subsidized, unsubsidized, and formerly Guaranteed Student Loan), Federal Supplemental Loans for Students (SLS), ALAS, and the Federally Insured Student Loan (FISL). Note: A prior FFEL loan may be included in a Direct Consolidation Loan only if the borrower is unable to obtain an FFEL consolidation loan with income-sensitive repayment terms that are acceptable;

  • Federal Perkins Loans, including National Defense and National Direct Student Loans (NDSL); Note: you may lose some of the favorable loan forgiveness provisions on the Perkins loan when it is included in the consolidation loan.

  • Health Professions Student Loans (HPSL), Health Education Assistance Loans (HEAL), Nursing Student Loans (NSL), and Loans for Disadvantaged Students (LDS). Note: Primary Care Loans (PCL) are not eligible for Direct Loan Consolidation;

  • loans made under the FFEL Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) program; and

  • prior FFEL consolidation loans.

In addition to the loan types listed previously, HEA allows only the Federal Direct Consolidation Loan Program (and not the FFEL) to consolidate Direct Loans, which include:

  • Ford Federal Direct Subsidized Loans

  • Ford Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan

  • Ford Federal Direct PLUS (parent loans)

  • prior Direct Consolidation loans
