Cancellation

You may qualify to have your HPSL loan canceled, allowing the principal and interest to be paid off, either in part or completely. You may be required to make any payments that were due prior to the cancellation period.

Bankruptcy

In most cases, your HPSL loans can not be discharged by a bankruptcy. Please contact your attorney for information on this.

Total and permanent disability

If you are unable to engage in any substantial gainful activity because of a medically determinable, permanent, and total impairment, the unpaid balance of your loan, including accrued interest, may be canceled. To claim this entitlement, complete and submit the Loan
Discharge Application: Total and Permanent Disability
form to the Student Account Assistance office for loan cancellation. Include a physician’s statement with your request that certifies the date of onset, nature, and extent of your disability, along with copies of all medical records pertinent to the disability.

Death

In the case of death, the unpaid balance of your HPSL loan, including accrued interest, may be canceled. The executor of your estate must submit a death certificate or other official proof which is conclusive under state law.
